Hello everyone, it's that day of the week again... Oh wait, it's Tuesday. Happy Tuesday!
This last week we had Brad Wilcox come to our mission. He presented in our zone conference, so we had to move it to a Monday, hence why I'm writing today. And wow, he is such a great speaker. He talked to us about the atonement, and shared some of his experience working with the YSA when he was a bishop. Some neat ideas from his talk include: Time is the medium in which the atonement can change us The atonement is a gift that we must choose to accept The Gospel of Jesus Christ is like a phone number. Sure, you can dial God your way, but it will never reach him unless it's correct We aren't earning heaven, we are learning heaven Don't look sideways for excuses, look up for help
It's been a good week. Also, as part of his trip, he spoke to all the youth here. They all gathered at a stake center. As part of his speech, he wanted all the youth to pull up a little thing on their phone that has uplifting messages or things to share with their friends. He asked our social media leaders to make something (which isn't me anymore if you forgor) so they go off and design this nice little flyer. Afterwards they come over to me and ask how to put it on a QR code.
QR codes can really only contain a link to somewhere else, and the thing they designed was basically a moving image with hyperlinks on it. Technically speaking, what they wanted wasn't really possible without a little bit of code. So I told them it was no problem, wrote a little code to turn their image into a GIF and then placed an HTML map on top of where the hyperlinks should have been and called it a day. It worked great, so I threw it on Github to host and then generated a dynamic QR code to pull it up. The QR code I generated uses the software I wrote called Riplakish, and it's currently running on a little Raspberry Pi in my parents' basement. So, Mom and Dad, about 600 devices just connected to that little thing sitting in your basement to get a redirect code to Github. Surprise.
In other news, the work in La Mesa is going great. The members are so great, the people are friendly. I couldn't ask more out of an English area. One of the friends we are teaching loves the Book of Mormon videos. The bishop in the La Mesa ward has an old Wolkswagon bus that he converted into an electric vehicle. Life is good.
Enjoy your week! Don't forget to prepare for the sacrament, it's coming up!
